MID Energy Meters: Precise Billing & Energy Monitoring

MID energy meters are certified according to the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and are approved for the official billing of energy costs. In modern measurement technology, they are indispensable for transparent energy management.

When is an MID Meter Required?

An energy meter with MID approval is always mandatory when electricity is billed to third parties. This applies, for example, to billing in rental properties, at charging stations for electric cars, or when passing on self-generated electricity (e.g., from PV systems).

Direct Measurement vs. CT Connection

When choosing the right meter, a distinction must be made between direct-measuring devices (usually up to 80A) and meters for current transformer (CT) connection (5A or 1A secondary current).

  • Direct Measurement: Simple installation, the current flows directly through the meter.
  • CT Connection: Required for high currents. The meter is connected via current transformers. The correct transformer ratio must be taken into account.

Communication & Interfaces

For integration into BMS or EMS systems, modern MID meters have various interfaces:

  • Modbus RTU (RS485): The industry standard for data transmission.
  • M-Bus: Frequently used in building automation.
  • Modbus TCP: Direct integration into IP networks.
