Frequently asked questions

Why order a 1 A transformer instead of 5 A?

Because of the measuring lead: its losses rise with the square of the current, so at 1 A they are one twenty-fifth of the losses at 5 A. If the meter sits far from the transformer, 1 A keeps the burden small and the rated output of the transformer can be smaller too. Calculating the burden →

Does my meter accept 1 A?

Check the current input of the meter or instrument: it must be designed for 1 A secondary. CT-operated meters are available for 1 A or 5 A; the ratio is set on the meter. Current transformers for meters →

Is 1 A less accurate?

No. The accuracy class applies to the ratio regardless of the secondary current, and with a smaller burden on the same lead the 1 A transformer usually works closer to its class.

How do I read 400/1 A?

400 A in the conductor give 1 A at the meter, a factor of 400. Every ratio has its own page with all matching versions and delivery dates.
